2. Tooth Loss
Losing teeth without a clear cause can signal weak bones in your jaw. Osteoporosis lowers bone density throughout your body, including the bones that hold your teeth in place. When this bone becomes thin, your teeth may loosen or fall out more easily. Changes in how your teeth fit together or dentures that feel loose can happen as the jawbone shrinks and loses strength.
Tooth loss often links to gum disease, poor oral care, or smoking, but low bone density can make these problems worse. If your jawbone cannot support your teeth, even mild gum disease can lead to tooth loss faster than expected. Bone loss in the jaw does not cause pain at first. You may not notice a problem until a tooth becomes loose or falls out.
3. Widows Hump
A widow’s hump is a rounded curve that forms at the top of your upper back. Your shoulders may start to roll forward, and your head may lean slightly in front of your body instead of sitting straight above your spine. This change often happens when small bones in your spine weaken and compress.
Osteoporosis can cause tiny fractures in these bones, especially in the middle and upper back. As the bones lose height, your spine begins to curve. You might also see a gradual loss of height over time. Clothes may not fit the same way, and friends or family may comment that you look more hunched than before.
At first, the curve may seem mild, but it can become more noticeable if bone loss continues. Women after menopause face a higher risk because lower hormone levels speed up bone loss. Aging, low physical activity, smoking, and long-term use of corticosteroid medications also raise your risk.
4. Genetics
Your genes play a key role in your bone strength. If your parents or siblings have osteoporosis or have frequent fractures, your risk is higher. A family history of hip or spine fractures is an important warning sign. You may inherit genes that affect how your body builds and maintains bone.
Some rare genetic conditions cause very low bone density in childhood, leading to fragile bones and vision problems early in life. Even without a rare disorder, smaller genetic changes can still lower your peak bone mass. Bone mass usually reaches its highest level in your late 20s. If your genes limit how much bone you build during these years, you start adulthood with less bone in reserve.
As you age and naturally lose bone, you may reach a fracture risk sooner than others. Genetics can also affect how your body uses calcium and vitamin D. If your body does not process these nutrients well, your bones may weaken over time.

If a bone density scan shows low bone mass, you face a higher risk of osteoporosis. This test measures how much mineral, such as calcium, is in your bones. Low results mean your bones have lost strength. You may not feel any different, as low bone density does not cause pain on its own.
Many people learn about it only after routine screening or after a minor fracture. Low bone density, sometimes called osteopenia, is not the same as osteoporosis but can progress if bone loss continues. Your risk increases with age, especially after menopause or after age 70 in men.
Factors such as low body weight, a family history of hip fractures, smoking, heavy alcohol use, and long-term use of steroid medications can raise your chances of testing positive. Some long-term health conditions can also weaken bones. Low calcium intake, vitamin D deficiency, and limited physical activity may also contribute to reduced bone density over time.
6. You Have Had a Fracture for a Minor Issue
If you break a bone after a minor fall or simple movement, you may have weak bones. A fall from standing height should not break a healthy bone. When it does, it can point to low bone strength, and this type of break is called a fragility fracture. It can happen in your hip, wrist, or spine.
You might also break a bone while bending, lifting something light, or even coughing. Osteoporosis often has no warning signs before a fracture. Many people learn they have bone loss only after they break a bone. Minor events that should not cause a fracture include slipping on a flat floor, stepping off a low curb, lifting a grocery bag, or turning quickly at the waist.
If you are over 50 and have had this type of fracture, your risk of another break increases. Some medicines can also raise your risk. Long-term use of glucocorticoids, certain anti-seizure drugs, some hormone-based cancer treatments, and some antidepressants can weaken bones over time.

Your body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium. Without enough vitamin D, your bones lose strength and density over time. You may not notice low vitamin D right away, as it often causes no clear symptoms in the early stages. Still, low levels can slowly weaken your bones and raise your risk of fractures.
Vitamin D supports more than bone health. It also helps your muscles and nerves work well. If you have a deficiency, you might feel muscle weakness or mild bone pain. These signs can seem minor, but they may point to deeper bone loss. You face a higher risk if you spend little time in sunlight or always use strong sun protection.
Darker skin, older age, and certain digestive problems can lower your vitamin D levels. If your kidneys or liver do not work well, your body may struggle to activate vitamin D. Over time, low vitamin D can lead to soft or fragile bones, which increases your chance of osteoporosis and unexpected fractures.

You may notice joint pain that comes and goes without a clear injury. This pain can affect your hips, knees, wrists, or shoulders. It often feels dull and deep rather than sharp. Osteoporosis does not directly damage your joints, but it weakens your bones.
When bones lose strength and density, the areas around your joints may feel sore because they carry more stress during daily movement. You might feel discomfort when you stand for long periods or climb stairs. Even simple tasks like bending or lifting light items can cause aching. General joint pain can also happen with other conditions, such as osteoarthritis.
The key difference is that osteoporosis often stays silent until a fracture occurs. If your joint pain appears along with risk factors like aging, menopause, low body weight, or long-term use of steroid medications, your bones may be losing strength.
9. Weak Fingernails
Your nails can reflect changes happening in your body. If your bones lose strength over time, your nails may also become thin or easy to break. Weak fingernails alone do not prove you have osteoporosis, but they can signal low mineral levels that affect both nails and bones.
Bones need minerals like calcium and phosphate to stay strong. Your body also needs enough vitamin D to absorb calcium. If you do not get enough of these nutrients, your body may pull calcium from your bones, which can lower bone density over time.
You may notice nails that split or peel in layers, crack after minor bumps, grow slowly, or bend easily. These changes can have other causes, such as frequent hand washing, nail products, or aging. Still, when brittle nails appear along with other risk factors like older age, menopause, low body weight, or a family history of fractures, they deserve attention.
10. Lowered Activity Levels
Lowered activity levels often signal changes in bone and muscle health. You may gradually move less, skip walks, avoid stairs, or stop hobbies that once kept you active. These changes can go unnoticed at first but may indicate underlying bone loss.
Weaker bones and muscles make everyday tasks feel harder, and you might feel tired after short periods of standing or light chores. Muscle weakness and joint stiffness, which become more common with age, also reduce your desire to stay active. When you move less, your bones lose strength faster. Regular weight-bearing activity, such as walking or light strength exercises, keeps bones dense.
Without it, you may experience faster bone loss and a higher risk of fractures. Lowered activity levels also affect your balance. Poor balance increases your risk of falls, which can cause broken hips and spine fractures in older adults. Even a minor fall from standing height can lead to a break if your bones are already weak.
