2. Age

Your risk of developing trigger finger increases as you get older. The condition most commonly appears in adults over the age of 40 because the tendons in the hand naturally lose flexibility with age and become more prone to irritation.
Over time, the tissues surrounding the tendons may thicken and form small nodules. These structural changes make it harder for the tendon to glide smoothly through its sheath when you bend or straighten your finger. As a result, stiffness can develop, along with the catching or locking sensation that characterizes trigger finger.
Younger people can still develop trigger finger, but it is less common. When it does occur, it is often linked to repetitive hand movements or underlying medical conditions such as diabetes or arthritis. In children, trigger finger usually affects the thumb and may improve on its own without treatment.
3. Hormonal

Hormonal changes can affect how tendons in the hands move and how flexible they are. When hormone levels shift, such as during pregnancy or menopause, tissues around the tendons may swell more easily.
This swelling can narrow the space where the tendon slides, making it harder for the finger to bend and straighten smoothly. Certain drugs that influence hormones or fluid levels, such as some corticosteroids, may gradually irritate or weaken the tendon area with long-term use. Medications for autoimmune conditions can also contribute by altering the body’s inflammatory response, leading to swelling around the tendon sheath.
Drugs used to manage fluid retention or some heart conditions can indirectly affect the hands by changing the salt and water balance in body tissues. This may cause mild hand swelling that restricts normal finger movement.

The exact cause is not fully understood, but the condition tends to run in families. It is more common in people with certain health conditions, such as diabetes or epilepsy. Lifestyle factors like smoking and frequent alcohol use may also increase the risk.
6. Surgery
Surgery may be considered if your finger continues to lock or catch despite rest and other treatments. The main goal of the procedure is to release the tightened portion of the tendon sheath so the tendon can glide smoothly again. The procedure is usually done using local anesthesia or a nerve block, which numbs the hand while you remain awake.
The surgeon makes a small incision in the palm near the base of the affected finger. Through this opening, the tight band of tissue that is restricting tendon movement is carefully released. The incision is then closed with stitches and covered with a light dressing. After surgery, the bandage is typically kept in place for about two days.
Gentle bending and straightening of the finger often begin soon afterward to help prevent stiffness. Stitches are usually removed within two weeks, and most people regain normal finger movement within a few weeks.
7. RSI/Injury
