These pressure shifts often occur during flying, mountain driving, or scuba diving. When the outside air pressure rises or falls quickly, the air in your middle ear may not adjust right away. 4. Stroke

Although the viruses that lead to meningitis can spread between people, close contact with someone who has viral meningitis rarely causes meningitis itself.

You can lower your risk by washing your hands often, avoiding touching your face, limiting contact with people who are sick, and keeping vaccinations up to date. Vertigo linked to viral meningitis usually improves as the infection clears and the inflammation subsides.

6. Stress

Stress can affect your body in many ways, including how you sense balance. When you feel anxious or under pressure, your breathing and heart rate may change. This can reduce blood flow to the inner ear or brain, making you feel lightheaded or unsteady.

Your body’s stress response can also create tension in your neck and shoulder muscles. This tightness may interfere with balance signals sent from your body to your brain, sometimes leading to sensations of spinning or swaying that resemble vertigo.

Dizziness may become more frequent when stress occurs along with fatigue, dehydration, or skipping meals. These factors can lower blood pressure or glucose levels, making vertigo symptoms more noticeable.

7. Acute Labyrinthitis

Acute labyrinthitis is an inner ear condition that happens when the labyrinth, a tiny structure deep inside your ear, becomes swollen or irritated. Managing symptoms often includes a low-salt diet and resting during episodes. If vertigo strikes, lie still with your eyes closed until it passes. Avoid driving or using machinery until you feel fully steady, as symptoms can return unexpectedly.

9. Motion Sickness

Motion sickness happens when your brain receives mixed signals about movement from your eyes, inner ears, and body. BPPV is not dangerous, but repeated episodes can affect stability. In clinical settings, special repositioning maneuvers can guide the loose crystals back into place, often easing symptoms and helping restore balance.

11. Calcium Deposits in the Inner Ear

Sometimes vertigo happens when tiny calcium crystals called otoconia move into parts of your inner ear where they do not belong. These crystals normally rest in a small structure called the utricle. When they loosen and drift into a semicircular canal, they disrupt the fluid movement that helps your brain sense motion.

When your head changes position, the displaced crystals shift and send false signals to your brain. This creates the spinning sensation known as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). These brief episodes are often triggered by simple movements such as rolling in bed, bending down, or looking up.

Symptoms commonly include sudden dizziness, light-headedness, or loss of balance. Some people may also feel queasy or unsteady when standing or walking. BPPV becomes more likely with age as the crystals loosen naturally, and it can also happen after a head injury or long periods of lying still.

12. Vestibular Neuronitis

Vestibular neuronitis happens when the vestibular nerve, which sends balance and movement signals from your inner ear to your brain, becomes inflamed. This condition often begins suddenly and can cause intense spinning sensations that may last for several days. You may also feel off balance or unsteady when walking.

Most cases follow a viral infection such as a cold or flu. The inflammation disrupts the nerve’s ability to send accurate balance information, causing your brain to receive confusing signals from each ear. Unlike labyrinthitis, vestibular neuronitis does not usually cause hearing loss or ringing in the ear.

Symptoms often appear suddenly and may include constant vertigo lasting hours to days, nausea with occasional vomiting, difficulty walking in a straight line, and a strong spinning sensation that worsens with head movement. As the inflammation improves, your brain gradually adjusts to the uneven input from the inner ears.

13. Perilymph Fistula

A perilymph fistula occurs when a small tear or hole forms in the thin membranes that separate the middle ear from the inner ear. These membranes, called the oval and round windows, normally keep inner-ear fluid contained. When one of them is damaged, fluid leaks into the middle ear and interferes with both balance and hearing.

Symptoms often include vertigo that worsens with movement, coughing, sneezing, or lifting heavy objects. Changes in pressure, such as blowing your nose or flying in an airplane, may also make dizziness more pronounced. Some people notice mild hearing loss or a feeling of fullness in one ear.

This condition can develop after head injuries or barotrauma from diving or flying. Straining or sudden pressure changes may also trigger it, and in rare cases it can occur without a clear cause. Treatment includes rest, avoiding activities that increase pressure in your head, or, in some cases, surgically repairing the tear.

14. Brain Tumor

A brain tumor can cause vertigo when it presses on areas of the brain that control balance, such as the cerebellum or brainstem. This pressure affects the brain’s signal processing from the eyes and inner ears, causing a spinning or unsteady feeling.

Tumors can be noncancerous or cancerous. The symptoms depend on the tumor’s size and location. You might experience headache, nausea, vision changes, weakness on one side of your body, or trouble with coordination.

Some people develop dizziness or vertigo that worsens with movement or changes in position. When a tumor is located near the vestibular nerve or balance centers, vertigo is often a prominent symptom.

Doctors use imaging tests such as MRI or CT scans to locate the tumor. Treatment may involve surgery, radiation therapy, or drugs that fight cancer. These treatments reduce pressure, remove or shrink the tumor, and ease symptoms such as vertigo.
