Pulmonary rehabilitation and smoking cessation help protect your lungs and reduce strain on the pleura.

14. Blood Clots

Blood clots can cause pleurisy when they block blood flow in your lungs. This condition is called pulmonary embolism. It often begins as a clot in a deep vein in your leg, known as deep vein thrombosis, that travels through your bloodstream to your lungs.

When a clot blocks a lung artery, it irritates and inflames nearby tissue. This inflammation can spread to the pleura, the thin lining around your lungs. You may feel sharp chest pain that worsens with deep breathing, coughing, or movement. Other symptoms can appear suddenly, including shortness of breath, fast breathing, coughing, coughing up blood, `lightheadedness, or a rapid heartbeat.

Risk factors include prolonged sitting, recent surgery, smoking, pregnancy, cancer, prior blood clots, and inherited clotting disorders. Seek emergency care if pulmonary embolism is suspected. Imaging tests to confirm the diagnosis and typically treat it with blood thinners. Severe cases may require clot-dissolving medications or specialized procedures.
