2. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a group of long-term lung conditions that make it difficult to move air in and out of the lungs. The two main types are emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
In emphysema, the tiny air sacs lose their elasticity and become damaged. In chronic bronchitis, the airways remain inflamed and produce excess mucus, which restricts airflow. COPD usually develops slowly over many years. Early on, changes in breathing may be subtle and easy to overlook.
As the condition progresses, airflow limitation becomes more noticeable and persistent. Common symptoms include ongoing shortness of breath, a long-lasting cough, wheezing, and chest tightness. Breathlessness often begins during physical activity and may eventually occur even at rest as lung function declines.
Smoking is the leading cause of COPD. Long-term exposure to air pollution, chemical fumes, or occupational dust also increases risk. Some people who have never smoked may still develop COPD due to genetic factors or prolonged workplace exposure.
3. Pneumonia

Pneumonia occurs when the lungs become infected and inflamed, most often due to bacteria, viruses, or fungi. The infection causes the tiny air sacs in the lungs to fill with fluid or pus, which interferes with normal oxygen exchange and makes breathing more difficult. As the lungs become inflamed, breathing may feel shallow or labored.
Many people experience shortness of breath and a sensation of not getting enough air, especially during activity or deep breathing. Common symptoms include coughing, fever, chills, and chest pain that worsens when breathing deeply or coughing. The cough may produce yellow or green phlegm. Some people also feel extreme fatigue, weakness, nausea, or vomiting.
4. Pneumothorax
A pneumothorax, also called a collapsed lung, occurs when air leaks into the space between the lung and the chest wall. This trapped air puts pressure on the lung and prevents it from expanding fully during breathing. The condition may affect one or both lungs, depending on the underlying cause and severity.
Symptoms often begin suddenly. Many people experience sharp chest pain that worsens with deep breathing or coughing, followed by shortness of breath. In more severe cases, additional signs may include a rapid heartbeat, lightheadedness, or bluish discoloration of the skin due to reduced oxygen levels.
Pneumothorax can result from chest injuries such as accidents, rib fractures, or certain medical procedures. It may also occur spontaneously when small air blisters on the lung surface rupture, which is more common in tall, thin individuals and smokers. Underlying lung conditions, including asthma, COPD, or cystic fibrosis, increase the risk.
5. Lung Cancer
Lung cancer symptoms often develop gradually, which means they may not be noticeable in the early stages. Shortness of breath can be one of the first warning signs, especially when it persists or worsens over time. This change in breathing happens when a tumor blocks part of the airway or reduces the amount of healthy lung tissue available for normal oxygen exchange.
As the disease progresses, other symptoms may appear alongside breathlessness. These can include a cough that does not go away, wheezing, or chest pain. Some people may also cough up blood, feel unusually tired, or experience unintentional weight loss. When lung cancer spreads beyond the lungs, additional symptoms may develop in other parts of the body. Swollen lymph nodes in the chest can limit how fully the lungs expand, which can further increase the sensation of shortness of breath.
6. Anemia

Anemia occurs when the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to tissues. With less oxygen available, the body must work harder to meet its needs, which can lead to shortness of breath, even during mild activity. Fatigue, weakness, and dizziness are also common early signs.
There are several types of anemia, with iron deficiency being the most common. Iron deficiency may result from low dietary intake, ongoing blood loss, or problems absorbing nutrients. Other causes include vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, chronic medical conditions, and inherited blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia or thalassemia.
Diagnosis typically begins with blood tests that measure hemoglobin levels and red blood cell counts. Additional tests may check iron, vitamin B12, or folate levels to determine the underlying cause of the anemia.
7. Pulmonary Embolism

A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot travels to the lungs and blocks a blood vessel, reducing oxygen levels in the blood. Most clots begin in the deep veins of the legs, a condition known as deep vein thrombosis, before breaking free and moving to the lungs.
Common signs include abrupt shortness of breath, chest pain that worsens with deep breathing, and a rapid heartbeat. Some people may also develop a cough that produces small amounts of blood. In more severe cases, reduced oxygen delivery can cause lightheadedness or fainting. Blood-thinning medications are commonly used, while severe cases may require clot-dissolving drugs or procedures to remove the blockage directly.
8. Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria that most often affects the lungs. The germs spread through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks, releasing tiny droplets that can be inhaled by others without direct contact.
Once the bacteria reach the lungs, inflammation can interfere with normal breathing. Symptoms may include a cough that lasts for weeks, chest pain, and shortness of breath. Many people also experience fever, night sweats, fatigue, and unintentional weight loss. In some cases, coughing up mucus or small amounts of blood may occur. Tuberculosis is not limited to the lungs and can spread to other parts of the body. When it affects areas such as the spine, kidneys, or brain, symptoms vary by location.
9. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Generalized Anxiety Disorder is a condition marked by ongoing worry or fear that keeps the body in a constant state of alert. This stress response can cause breathing to become faster and shallower, leading to sudden or unpredictable shortness of breath. Even without physical exertion, you may feel lightheaded or unable to catch your breath as the body reacts as if it is facing danger. Along with breathing changes, other symptoms often appear. These can include a racing heartbeat, muscle tension, restlessness, and difficulty sleeping.
These effects are linked to prolonged release of stress hormones, which keep the heart rate and breathing elevated over time. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is usually identified when excessive worry occurs most days for at least six months and interferes with daily activities.
Management may include structured talking therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps adjust thought patterns and physical responses to anxiety. In some cases, medications such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs may also be part of care.
10. Sarcoidosis
Sarcoidosis is a condition in which small clusters of inflamed tissue, called granulomas, form in different parts of the body, most commonly the lungs. When granulomas develop in lung tissue, they can interfere with oxygen transfer into the bloodstream, leading to shortness of breath during routine activities.
The condition may also affect the skin, eyes, heart, and lymph nodes. Symptoms often develop gradually and may be subtle at first. Many people notice a persistent dry cough, chest discomfort, or ongoing fatigue. Others may experience joint pain, fever, or unintentional weight loss. In some cases, individuals may not notice symptoms until the disease has progressed or is discovered during testing for breathing problems.
Sarcoidosis is frequently identified through imaging studies or laboratory tests performed to evaluate unexplained shortness of breath or abnormal chest findings. The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed to involve an overactive immune response. The condition most commonly affects adults between 20 and 50 years of age.
11. Chemical Exposure

Shortness of breath can develop after inhaling harmful chemicals, gases, or fumes that irritate the airways or damage lung tissue. These substances interfere with normal oxygen movement through the lungs. Some exposures cause immediate breathing problems, while others lead to gradual symptoms after repeated or long-term contact.
Common sources include cleaning products, disinfectants, and sterilizing chemicals used in healthcare settings, such as hydrogen peroxide, glutaraldehyde, and ethylene oxide. Breathing in these substances may cause coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or a burning sensation in the throat. Ongoing exposure can raise the risk of chronic breathing issues or trigger asthma-like symptoms.
In more severe situations, inhaling strong acids, toxic gases, or chemical vapors can lead to chemical pneumonitis. This condition causes lung inflammation, stiffness, and reduced oxygen exchange, which may result in significant breathing distress if not addressed promptly. Risk can be reduced by using proper ventilation, wearing protective equipment, and handling chemicals carefully.
12. Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs when you breathe in carbon monoxide, an invisible and odorless gas produced when fuels such as gas, wood, or charcoal burn without enough oxygen. Because the gas cannot be seen or smelled, exposure may go unnoticed until symptoms begin to develop.
Early signs often include dizziness, weakness, nausea, headache, or confusion. As exposure continues, shortness of breath can occur because the body is not receiving enough oxygen. In severe cases, oxygen deprivation may lead to fainting or loss of consciousness. This condition happens because carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin in the blood more tightly than oxygen.
When this occurs, oxygen delivery to vital organs such as the heart and brain is reduced, interfering with normal body function. Common sources of exposure include car exhaust, furnaces, generators, and gas stoves used in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas. Charcoal grills or running a vehicle inside a garage can also release dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.
13. Anaphylactic Shock
Anaphylactic shock is a sudden, severe allergic reaction that can cause rapid shortness of breath shortly after exposure to an allergen. It affects multiple body systems at once and can become life-threatening without immediate treatment. Common triggers include certain foods, insect stings, and medications.
Early signs often involve the skin, such as itching, hives, redness, or swelling. As the reaction progresses, swelling of the throat and airways can make breathing difficult. At the same time, blood pressure may drop, leading to a weak pulse, dizziness, or fainting. Because anaphylaxis affects several systems, symptoms may appear together.
Respiratory involvement can cause wheezing, throat tightness, and shortness of breath. Circulatory effects may lead to shock and loss of consciousness, while digestive symptoms such as vomiting, cramps, or diarrhea can also occur. Anaphylactic shock is a medical emergency and requires immediate help.
14. Cardiomegaly

Cardiomegaly refers to an enlarged heart and is a sign of an underlying condition rather than a disease on its own. When the heart is forced to work harder than normal, it may enlarge over time. This reduced efficiency can lead to symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling in the legs or ankles as blood circulation becomes less effective.
Several health problems can cause the heart to enlarge. Common causes include long-standing high blood pressure, heart valve disease, cardiomyopathy, or damage from a previous heart injury. Chronic lung conditions and certain thyroid disorders can also place extra strain on the heart and contribute to enlargement.
As the heart enlarges, its muscle walls may thicken or stretch, which makes it harder to pump blood efficiently. This can allow fluid to build up in the lungs, leading to shortness of breath, especially during physical activity or when lying flat.
