Tiredness is one of the most common early signs of leukemia. It begins when the bone marrow produces too many abnormal white blood cells. These cancerous cells crowd out healthy red blood cells, which are responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body.
With fewer red blood cells available, oxygen delivery drops, leading to persistent fatigue. As oxygen levels decrease, everyday activities start to feel more difficult. Simple tasks such as walking short distances or climbing stairs may feel unusually exhausting. This tiredness often worsens over time and can interfere with concentration, mood, and daily routines.
Leukemia-related tiredness often occurs along with pale skin, shortness of breath, or frequent infections. Unlike fatigue caused by stress or lack of sleep, this type of tiredness does not improve with rest. A person may sleep well but still feel drained, making the fatigue harder to explain or ignore.
3. Dizziness

Dizziness can develop when leukemia affects how blood carries oxygen. As cancerous cells crowd the bone marrow, the production of healthy red blood cells drops. With fewer red blood cells available, less oxygen reaches the brain, which can lead to feelings of lightheadedness or imbalance. Early on, people may notice dizziness during everyday activities. Standing up quickly or doing mild physical exertion can trigger a sensation of faintness or unsteadiness.
As the condition progresses, episodes of dizziness can vary in intensity and duration. Some may experience blurred vision, a fast heartbeat, or increased fatigue during these episodes. Frequent or worsening dizziness can signal that the body is not receiving enough oxygen or nutrients through the blood. Simple tasks like walking, showering, or climbing stairs may become more challenging and trigger symptoms more easily.
4. Paleness
Paleness is a common early sign of leukemia. It begins when the number of healthy red blood cells drops, a condition known as anemia. A lower red blood cell count reduces oxygen delivery to tissues, leading to pale skin.
As oxygen levels decline, visible changes in appearance may develop. The skin can look lighter or “washed out,” particularly on the face, lips, or inside the eyelids. This is not caused by changes in skin pigment but by reduced blood flow and oxygen in the tissues. Paleness often appears alongside tiredness, shortness of breath, and general weakness.

5. High White Blood Count

A high white blood cell count can be an early sign of leukemia. It occurs when the bone marrow begins producing too many white blood cells, many of which are abnormal and unable to function properly. White blood cells normally help fight infection, but in leukemia, the excess immature cells crowd the blood and interfere with normal blood cell production.
This change is usually detected through a complete blood count (CBC), a blood test that measures white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. People might notice frequent nosebleeds or bleeding gums, especially after brushing or flossing. Minor cuts may take a long time to close and women may have heavier or longer menstrual bleeding. In some cases, bleeding can happen without a clear injury. It may occur in the mouth, stomach, or other internal areas, leading to more serious problems if not checked.
Easy bruising can also happen along with bleeding. Bruises may appear without hitting anything or may seem larger and darker than usual. The skin may show several bruises in different stages of healing.
7. Bruising

Unusual bruising can be an early sign of leukemia. It begins when the bone marrow produces fewer platelets, which are the blood cells responsible for helping blood clot. With a reduced platelet count, small blood vessels under the skin can break and leak more easily, even with little or no injury.
As a result, bruises may appear suddenly or in unexpected areas such as the back, chest, or arms. These bruises often look red or purple at first and may take longer than usual to fade, gradually changing to brown or yellow as they heal. When platelet levels drop further, blood has a harder time stopping small leaks under the skin.

Joint pain can be an early sign of leukemia. It begins when abnormal white blood cells build up in the bone marrow, crowding the space where healthy cells normally form. This increased pressure can affect nearby joints and tissues, leading to discomfort or pain.
The pain often appears first in larger joints such as the knees, hips, or shoulders. It may start as a dull ache that spreads gradually or present as sharper pain that comes and goes. Unexpected weight loss can be an early sign of leukemia. It often begins without changes to diet or physical activity, and many people notice their clothes fitting more loosely or a gradual drop in weight. This happens because leukemia alters how the body uses energy and can interfere with normal appetite.
As leukemia cells grow and multiply, they consume a large amount of the body’s energy. This increased energy demand causes the body to burn calories faster than usual. At the same time, ongoing fatigue and weakness may reduce a person’s desire or ability to eat regularly. Reduced food intake can worsen over time.
Some people feel full after eating only small amounts due to leukemia, which can cause the spleen to enlarge and press on the stomach. Eating less consistently contributes further to weight loss. 12. Enlarged Liver

13. Headache

Headaches can occur when leukemia affects normal blood flow or increases pressure within the skull. As abnormal white blood cells multiply, they can thicken the blood and reduce oxygen delivery to the brain. This lack of oxygen may lead to a dull, throbbing, or persistent head pain.
As this process continues, headaches may feel stronger or appear suddenly. Some people notice they are more intense than typical headaches and may occur alongside blurred vision, dizziness, or nausea. Unlike common tension headaches, this type of pain often does not improve with rest or simple pain relief.
The timing and behavior of the headaches can also be different. They may occur at any time of day and sometimes worsen when lying flat or bending forward. In rare cases, blocked blood flow can cause swelling in veins of the neck or face, adding to discomfort.
14. Swelling
Swelling can develop when leukemia cells build up in different parts of the body. As leukemia progresses, swelling can also involve internal organs. The liver or spleen may enlarge as cancer cells accumulate, causing the abdomen to look or feel swollen. This enlargement often leads to a sense of fullness or mild discomfort, particularly in the upper left side of the abdomen or after eating small meals.
In certain cases, swelling may affect the face, neck, arms, or hands. This happens when enlarged lymph nodes or leukemia cells press on nearby blood vessels, slowing blood flow. Visible veins in the neck or chest may appear, and swelling in these areas can develop quickly.
15. Risk Factors
Leukemia develops when blood-forming cells in the bone marrow undergo changes and begin to grow out of control. These abnormal cells interfere with normal blood cell production. While the exact cause of these changes is often unknown, several factors are known to increase the risk of developing leukemia.
Age is one of the strongest risk factors. Many types of leukemia occur more often in older adults, particularly after age 60. However, some forms affect younger populations. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is most common in children, especially between the ages of 3 and 7.
