8. Asbestos Exposure

These fibers can remain in your lungs for many years. Once inside your body, asbestos fibers irritate lung tissue. Your cells try to repair the damage repeatedly, and over time, this cycle causes changes that raise cancer risk.

If you worked in construction, shipbuilding, mining, or factories that used insulation, you face higher exposure. Home repairs in older buildings can also put you at risk, especially without safety measures.

Smoking and asbestos together cause more harm. If you smoke and inhale asbestos fibers, your risk rises more than with either one alone, as both damage lung cells in different ways. You cannot see or smell asbestos fibers in the air, so prevention and awareness matter when you work or live around older materials.
