Double vision, also called diplopia, occurs when objects appear to overlap or show up side by side instead of as a single clear image. When a cataract begins to cloud the lens, incoming light scatters rather than focusing properly on the retina, which can create two images instead of one.

In the early stages, double vision may come and go. You might notice it more when reading, using screens, or in bright lighting. As the cataract thickens and the lens becomes uneven, visual distortion becomes more noticeable and harder to overlook. If the double vision goes away when one eye is closed, the issue is often linked to changes within that eye, such as a cloudy or uneven lens caused by a cataract.

This type is called monocular double vision and may cause the same object to appear twice even with one eye open. Binocular double vision, which involves both eyes, usually comes from eye alignment problems. In this case, images may overlap, shift, or appear side by side only when both eyes are open.

3. Cloudy Vision

Cloudy vision is often the first sign you notice when a cataract begins to develop. It can feel like looking through a foggy or dirty window, causing things that once appeared sharp to seem dim or hazy, even in bright light.

This cloudiness is often most noticeable when reading or doing close work. Words on a page may blur together, or you may find yourself holding objects closer to your eyes to see clearly. Because the change happens gradually, it is easy to overlook until everyday tasks start to feel more difficult. Cloudiness may affect one eye more than the other, since cataracts do not always progress at the same rate in both eyes.

You might also notice reduced contrast, with colors appearing faded and whites taking on a yellow or brown tint over time. Using stronger glasses or brighter lighting may help temporarily, but these adjustments will not stop the cataract from progressing.

4. Tinting of Eyes

You might notice that your eyes seem to take on a slightly yellow or brown tint as cataracts develop. This tint happens when the lens inside your eye becomes cloudy and changes color over time. The tinting may be mild at first but can gradually deepen, making colors look duller or less vibrant than before.

When the lens darkens, your eyes no longer filter light in the same way. Whites may appear yellow, and blues might seem faded. This change often happens slowly, so it may be hard to notice at first. Some people only become aware of it after comparing their vision with others or realizing colors no longer look the same.

This tinting can interfere with everyday activities such as reading, driving at night, or matching colors accurately. For example, distinguishing between dark shades like navy and black may become harder.

5. Difficulty Seeing at Night

You may notice that driving after dark becomes harder than it used to be. Streetlights, headlights, and road signs can appear dim or blurry, making it difficult to judge distance or see clearly. Because this change develops gradually, it may not be obvious at first.

This difficulty happens because cataracts cloud the eye’s natural lens, reducing the amount of light that reaches the retina. At night, when light levels are already low, your eyes need to gather as much light as possible. Instead, the cloudy lens scatters light, causing vision to appear foggy or dull. You may notice glare or halos around lights.

Bright objects can seem to glow, spread out, or create rings, which can be uncomfortable and distracting, especially while driving. To cope, you may find yourself avoiding nighttime driving or needing brighter lights indoors. While added lighting can help temporarily, it does not stop the cataract from continuing to progress.

6. The Halo Effect

You may notice glowing rings or circles around lights, especially at night. This is called the halo effect, and it often happens when the lens of your eye becomes cloudy from a cataract. Light entering your eye scatters instead of focusing normally, which makes bright lights look surrounded by a hazy ring.

This change is most noticeable when looking at streetlights, car headlights, or illuminated signs. Many people find that driving at night becomes harder because glare and halos make lights seem brighter and more distracting than usual. With normal vision, light appears clear and sharp without glowing rings.

When a cataract is present, light may look blurred and surrounded by bright or foggy circles. The halo effect often appears along with other symptoms, such as dim vision, and you may find yourself needing stronger lighting for reading or close-up tasks.

7. Sensitivity to Bright Lights

You may notice that bright sunlight or indoor lighting feels uncomfortable or even painful to your eyes. This sensitivity can develop when a cataract causes light entering the eye to scatter instead of focusing clearly, making light appear harsher and more intense than usual.

This sensitivity, also called photophobia, can make it difficult to stay in bright environments. You might find yourself squinting, closing your eyes, or feeling strained under strong lighting. Driving at night may also become uncomfortable because glare from oncoming headlights can feel especially dazzling.

As the lens continues to cloud, you may also see halos or circles around lights. Changes in how light passes through the lens can make everyday activities, like reading in bright rooms or being outside without sunglasses, more tiring. If you find that light bothers you more than before, schedule a regular eye exam to identify whether cataracts are causing the problem.

8. Needing New Glasses or Contacts More Often

You may notice that your glasses or contact lens prescription needs to be updated more often than before. Cataracts slowly cloud the eye’s natural lens, which changes how light passes through and affects overall vision clarity.

At first, it may seem like stronger lenses are the solution. You might get a new prescription and notice improvement for a short time, but the blur or haze can return within months. This frequent change often signals that vision is shifting faster than normal. As cataracts progress, the lens bends light unevenly. This can make objects appear less sharp, cause colors to fade, or increase glare from bright lights.

Because the lens continues to change, corrective lenses may no longer provide lasting clarity. If you find yourself needing new glasses or contacts more than once a year, a full eye exam can help identify whether cataracts are contributing to these changes.

9. Risk Factors

Cataracts can develop at any age, but they occur most often in older adults. Aging is the strongest risk factor because the lens inside the eye naturally becomes less clear over time, leading to cloudy vision.

Certain health conditions can increase the risk. Diabetes and high blood pressure affect how the eyes process sugars and oxygen, which can damage the lens. Obesity is also linked to a higher risk, often because it occurs alongside other long-term health issues.

Long-term exposure to sunlight without eye protection raises the risk as well. Ultraviolet (UV) light gradually damages lens proteins, causing them to cloud. Wearing sunglasses that block UV rays can help protect the eyes.

Eye injuries or previous eye surgery can cause cataracts to develop earlier than usual. Long-term use of certain medications, such as corticosteroids, may also speed up cataract formation. Lifestyle factors like smoking and heavy alcohol use further increase risk by reducing nutrients needed for eye health.

Family history plays a role as well. If close relatives have had cataracts, your risk may be higher. Women tend to develop cataracts slightly more often than men, although the exact reason for this difference is not fully understood.
